چکیده

The values of many of the parameters in climate models are often not known with any great precision. We describe the use of automatic diierentiation to examine the sensitivity of an uncoupled dynamic-thermodynamic sea-ice model to various parameters. We also illustrate the eeectiveness of using these sensitivity derivatives with an optimization algorithm to tune the parameters to maximize the agreement between simulated results and observational data.

Sensitivity Analysis and Parameter Tuning Scheme for Global Sea-Ice Modeling

Automatic differentiation (AD) is used to perform a multiple parameter sensitivity analysis for the Los Alamos sea-ice model CICE. Numerical experiments are run by six-hourly, 1997 forcing data with a two-hour time step, and the AD-based sensitivity scheme is validated by comparison with derivatives calculated using the conventional finite-difference approach. Twenty-two thermodynamic and dynam...

Optimization of a Sea Ice Model Using Basinwide Observations of Arctic Sea Ice Thickness, Extent, and Velocity

A stand-alone sea ice model is tuned and validated using satellite-derived, basinwide observations of sea ice thickness, extent, and velocity from the years 1993 to 2001. This is the first time that basin-scale measurements of sea ice thickness have been used for this purpose. The model is based on the CICE sea ice model code developed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, with some minor modi...

Uncertainty in the sensitivity of Arctic sea ice to global warming in a perturbed parameter climate model ensemble

[1] The retreat of Arctic sea ice is a very likely consequence of climate change and part of a key feedback process, which can accelerate global warming. The uncertainty in predictions in the rate of sea ice retreat requires quantification and ultimately reduction via observational constraints. Here we analyse a climate model ensemble with perturbations to parameters in the atmosphere model. We...

Attractor Based Analysis of Centrally Cracked Plate Subjected to Chaotic Excitation

The presence of part-through cracks with limited length is one of the prevalent defects in the plate structures. Due to the slight effect of this type of damages on the frequency response of the plates, conventional vibration-based damage assessment could be a challenging task. In this study for the first time, a recently developed state-space method which is based on the chaotic excitation is ...

Large ensemble modeling of the last deglacial retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet: comparison of simple and advanced statistical techniques

A 3-D hybrid ice-sheet model is applied to the last deglacial retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet over the last ∼ 20 000 yr. A large ensemble of 625 model runs is used to calibrate the model to modern and geologic data, including reconstructed grounding lines, relative sea-level records, elevation–age data and uplift rates, with an aggregate score computed for each run that measures overall...
